CryptoConvert’s v4.00 release is officially the largest and most extensive update in the app’s history – coming in at a whopping 120,000 lines of written, changed, or deleted code across 430 files. The update includes some significant UI changes, but it also is meant to set the stage for some really great new features that will be coming to the app within the next few updates (more on that below).

v4.00 Newest Things:

1. NEW FEATURE – Drawer Navigation

The app navigation is now handled by a drawer. As standard Android practice, there is a hamburger menu at the top of the app which will open the navigation drawer. This allows you to switch around to different areas in the app. While there are only 3 main feature areas of the app right now (Price Calculator, Currency Catalog, and Settings), the navigation drawer sets up the ability to easily add future components and features to the app.

2. NEW FEATURE – Currency Catalog

This is accessible through the navigation drawer, and is a very similar interface to when you are selecting a new currency in the converter mode. This mode makes it very easy to browse all of the different currencies that CryptoConvert supports. Upon clicking any of the Cryptocurrency entries, the Extended Information screen about that Cryptocurrency will show – similar to how if you click on a Cryptocurrency from the Multimode list. The currency catalog also gives you an easy way to make changes to your favorites list – which is used throughout the app.

3. Currency Data is now Fully Dynamic

Previously, any newly launched Cryptocurrencies would need to wait for an app update before it would be included in Cryptoconvert’s dataset. With v4.00, this currency data is now fully dynamic from our source (Nomics.com) so no update is required. If Nomics has the data, CryptoConvert has it too.

4. Concept of ‘STALE’ Currencies Added to the UI

Introducing the concept of currencies that can be dynamically added / removed from the incoming dataset required a solution to the problem of what happens when a cryptocurrency loses traction over time and stops being traded? Each cryptocurrency price that CryptoConvert receives has a timestamp associated with it. If the timestamp of a currency in the dataset is greater than (5) days old, then CryptoConvert will flag this currency in the UI to let you know that this price is older than 5 days old and that the value might not be very reliable.

You can click on this indicator to view the price timestamp for the stale currency – which is the latest timestamp Nomics has before it stopped being traded.

5. More Cryptocurrency Icons Added

Going from ~1,000 to now over ~5,000 cryptocurrencies required quite a few new icons (also fixing some that were previously missing).

6. CryptoConvert FREE now has access to simple ‘Settings’ options

CryptoConvert will have some basic settings options moving forward (like ‘Clear Favorites List’), but the primary CryptoConvert Pro default features are still locked.

7. Network Improvements – More Caching Implemented to Reduce Network Usage

Added caching for the Extended Information network calls so they don’t need to be re-fetched.

8+ Bug fixes, UI tweaks, and performance improvements

There are probably too many of these to count, but there have been a lot of minor detail changes throughout the app. It should look and feel more responsive now, as most touch elements throughout the app give some sort of feedback when clicked. Additionally, the app has been re-translated and updated. The currency catalog (sometimes referred to as the ‘currency picker’) also has a re-designed sort menu that looks and feels much better. The sort menu changes also includes a new sort – market cap (cryptocurrencies only).

Lastly, where is the app going from here?

Some of the future components we want to bring to CryptoConvert within the next few major updates:

  1. News – A section to catch up on any latest cryptocurrency news for coins you want to follow
  2. Portfolio Tracker – A section where you can choose any number of currencies and for each one, enter a value that represents the amount you own of that currency. Once that information is saved to the app, you’ll have an easy place to quickly check up on the estimated value of your entire crypto portfolio.
  3. Another highly requested feature has been price graphs, which would also be ideal to add within the next few updates.

Note – there may be a few minor releases to the app store before the next release notes blog post, but those will be simple hotfixes for any issues that come up as a result of all the new changes with the 4.00 update.

As always, if you have any feedback for the app or ideas on things we could be doing better, please tell us what you think. A lot of amazing feature ideas have come straight from user feedback (either from email or via App Store review), so we are always eager to receive more.
